Poem for Katie, Queen of Ohio #47
DARREN DEMAREE

I have filled your nursery
with blooming flowers,

so that when you’re born
in March they will have left

only the scent of once
beautiful, of once attached

to roots that fed that beauty.
It will be unpleasant

at first. We’ll remove all
of the dead flowers

once you’re born. These rituals
are important to me.
